Another Bargain Spanish Red
2009 Elefante Tempranillo Shiraz - $10.90
92 POINTS - GOURMET TRAVELLER WINE
We've been enjoying plenty of great drinking Spanish reds recently and continue to be amazed by the quality and value for money they offer. This is the latest to impress us and given the glowing reviews below we're clearly not the only ones loving it.
“Expressive. Generous. Appealing. Lots of ticks in lots of boxes. It smells and tastes of musk, boysenberry, rich ripe cherries, earth and cedarwood. Very dry, chalky, sour-edged finish - in a positive sense. I could drink a lot of this wine. It has shape, structure, generosity and, even, personality. For $12. Rated: 90 Points Alcohol: 13% Price: $12 Closure: Screwcap Drink: 2010 - 2012”- Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front.
"92 Points. Seemed a bit closed on the nose to start with, but opened up with ripe, plummy fruit and complexity. The wine is quite firm, but there is rich flavour to match and good length. Bourne liked its "depth of dark fruit, chocolate and spicy lift. There's a juicy core and fine grained tannins". This looks like a good each-way bet - lovely now and capable of a few years ageing"- Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine, Feb/ March 2012.
“...This is a thoroughly modern red blend from the Castilla region with lots of smart, bright fruit and some impressive earthiness as well. It's a ripe, full-bodied wine that has some appealing berry flavours tempered by good tannin structure. The label is as bold as the contents of the bottle and what is amazing is the price: at $12.99 this puts a lot of domestic reds to shame.”- Winsor Dobbin, http://wdwineoftheweek.blogspot.com/, Mar 6 2011.
"The bold red label of this young red encapsulates the verve of modern Spain. It tastes intense, ripe and liquorice-like but not heavy, with hearty flavours and balanced fine tannins. 4 stars”- Ralph Kyte-Powell, The Age Epicure, September 21 2010.

Quality Riesling Under $15
2011 Moppity Lock & Key Riesling - $14.90
It's a great time to be a Riesling lover in Australia, with quality examples such as this available for under $15.
Produced by the highly regarded Moppity Vineyards of the Hilltops region of southern New South Wales, the 2011 Lock & Key Riesling is everything you could ask for in a sub- $20 Australian Riesling.
"If you love classic dry riesling but are on a tight budget, this is a name well worth remembering. From the Moppity vineyard outside Young in New South Wales, it is an absolute bargain at a recommended retail price of around $16 - more so given it can sometimes be found discounted to considerably less. It has lemon zest fragrance, oodles of lime and grapefruit character on the quite austere palate and delightfully zingy racy acidity on the finish. A pristine and appealing partner for oysters, pan-fried seafood or Thai cuisine."- Winsor Dobbin, winsordobbin.com.au.

Australia's Queen Of Pinot Grigio
2010 Quealy Pobblebonk Pinot Grigio Blend - $22.90
Kathleen Quealy is undoubtedly Australia's Queen of Pinot Gris/ Grigio having introduced the variety to many Australian wine drinkers during her time at T'Gallant. Quealy continues to make some of Australia's finest examples under her Quealy label, this 'Pobblebonk' blend is one of the more interesting.
The 2010 Quealy 'Pobblebonk' is a Northern Italian varietal blend of Pinot Grigio, Friulano and Chardonnay, with a very small percentage of Muscat Giallo and Riesling. Delicious to drink now, Pobblebonk is an expressive wine that showcasing the adventurous spirit and talented winemaking of Kathleen Quealy.
"92 Points. Restrained and fine, with bath talc, violet, Nashi pear and anise on display; refreshing in texture and flavour, once again showing plenty of depth while remaining light on its feet; fragrant and fine to conclude. Drink By: 2014 Price: $25 Alcohol: 12.5%." - James Halliday, winecompanion.com.au
"From their Balnarring vineyard on Mornington’s ‘sole’, the varieties are interwoven; Pinot Grigio for mineral, texture and its characteristic pear notes, the increasingly interesting Friulano for flowery aromatics, juiciness and zip, Chardonnay for fruit and structure, along with small amounts of Riesling and Moscato Giallo to compliment or complement. This is far from obvious wine, yet it’s thrilling, fresh, lively and deeply interesting. As an important bonus, this is infinitely food friendly." - David Ridge, The Melbourne Review.
